The Style File

Time to relax, plant flowers and take in the sunshine.

Time to spruce up our wardrobes with a few new things.

Things that are in:
Bright, bold colours. Orange and yellow are fun, but bright blue and pink are the easiest when it comes to matching skin tones. When wearing brights, don't be tempted to mix them with black (it will look too 80's). For a fresher look, pair brights with denim or white. Fresh colour combos that pop: navy/grasshopper green and white; pale orange and bright pink; citrus and anything. Scarves, bags and jewels are a nice way to add colour without looking too trendy.

Ethnic prints are a classic and still in this year. Just be sure to scale the size of the print to the size of your body – small prints on the petite girls and large prints on the more voluptuous.

Florals can be seen everywhere. Remember to pass on the ditzy prints and go for bright and bold, graphic black and white. Daytime dresses can be wildly printed and updated with a big wide belt. Go for flirty flocks with lots of embellishments. Hems are going up. Sleek mini dresses are so sexy for those of you with great legs. Tunics are great for a day at the beach, but try one cinched and it does double time as a top over your jeans.

Metallics can be mixed with your daytime wardrobe as long as they are soft gold or silver and worn with white. After 5, glam it up with big gold bangles and a short beaded dress.

Bohemian chic is still huge this spring. Easy separates create a carefree vibe. (Isn't that what spring is all about?) Flare leg denims in a light wash and peasant tops covered in embroidery can be seen on the stars.
Speaking of stars, they are very in: star pendants, star earrings and star patterns on scarves, dresses and hoodies.

Platform wedges with cork heels are lightweight, hip and comfy. Ballet flats are painfree and sassy. Gladiator sandals look great with long flowy skirts, shorts and summer dresses. Petite women – be careful with these as the ankle strap can make you seem shorter.

Patent anything, a wide belt or clutch bag in a bright colour can add plenty of pop to an otherwise plain outfit, which is perfect for you frugal fashionistas.

For those of you who are skeptical about wearing shorts, capris and skirts are huge right now.

Things that are out:
Skulls. I have to admit I still own a great pair of sneakers with skulls that I just cannot part with. Although rocker-inspired fashion has been big the past few years, it has run its course.

Flip flops are only to be seen at the beach. No flip flops at work. Ever.

Skinny jeans. Try boot cuts and straight legs instead.

Overexposure is always out, as are cut offs, bare midriffs, tight tops and short shorts.

Well, it is great to see that there are more things in than out when it comes to spring fashion. Go through your closet, buy separates whenever possible, and don't spend a lot of coin on the trendy stuff.

Remember, a smile is the nicest thing
you can wear every day.
