The Style File

By Kelly Cormier
Underwear is the most important part of your wardrobe. What’s underneath it all can transform your shape, no surgery required. It is going to take a lot of courage, honesty and effort to go from drab to fab when it comes to your lingerie.

First things first: go through your drawers and throw out everything that doesn’t fit. Be ruthless.
Second: get fitted for a bra. I am suggesting every six months as we all fluctuate throughout our lives. What fit us when we were 20 may not fit the same way when we are in our 30s or 40s. Most major department stores will have bra fitters. Or look for specialty lingerie shops in your area. I prefer the latter, early in the morning when the shop is quiet and the staff has ample time to spend with me.

There are two types of lingerie: industrial (to give you shape)
sexy (to make you feel good)

These are basics everyone should have in their wardrobe.

INDUSTRIAL
Beige seam-free perfectly fitted bra. I don’t really like beige but it is a must, to wear under clingy knits and white blouses. Try a minimizer if your blouses are gaping or a demi cup if you want a little extra lift.

Spanx. I am not talking girdles here. For those of you who don’t know about this wonderful secret, they smooth you out and hold you in very comfortably – no digging or riding up. Whether you are a size 2 or 22, they make a big difference.

A power cami with a built-in bra offers support and coverage. Camis help clothes drape beautifully without clinging. Great under suit jackets and sweaters.

Flesh-coloured one-piece shaper. Remember, Lycra is your friend. You always want to create a slim, smooth silhouette, no matter what your size.

Full Lycra slip in black and nude. Great under slinky dresses or two-piece outfits.

Strapless halter bra, which can be worn many ways under all kinds of different necklines.

French cut briefs are a basic and can even be a little sexy.
Colours I recommend – black, white and, of course, nude.

Thongs for no panty lines. If you get the right fit, they are more comfortable than you may think. I find microfibre to be the least intrusive. When in doubt, for absolutely no panty lines, try Spanx.

That covers the basics – now for the sexy stuff.

SEXY
Black bra, a classic. To be worn under clothing that is not white or beige. The shape and fabric make it slightly sexy or va va voom.

A deep plunge bra for low cut garments will hoist you up and push you in. Try some lace with matching panties.

Camis in silk or stretchy fabric in pretty colours with lace or beads. Great for the holidays or that special date.

Boy shorts, so sexy in a girlish sort of way. So many colours and fabrics, sometimes hard to choose.

Thigh highs, fishnets, merry widows, garters or racy knickers. When it comes to being sexy, it is feeling sexy. Wear what makes you comfortable and have fun. Try something new, step out of your usual comfort zone and you just may surprise yourself.

’Til next time, Kelly

Remember, a smile is the nicest thing
you can wear every day.
